Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this project necessary?

Currently, the Brent Spence Bridge and the I-71/I-75 corridor support a level of use that far exceeds its original design. Specific problems include growing traffic congestion, safety concerns, and design deficiencies. ODOT and KYTC have initiated the study of the rehabilitation of the I-71/I-75 corridor, including the Brent Spence Bridge, to increase capacity and improve safety in this critical transportation corridor.

How can the public provide input?

Interested parties can contact stakeholders on the Advisory Committee for their community or business or call the project hotline at (513) 639-2172. A form is available on the website to submit feedback to the project team concerning the project.

Have any alternatives been decided upon yet?

Only conceptual alternative solutions have been identified at this time. Alternatives have been selected for further development and study. Some alternatives were dismissed based on their ability to meet purpose and need and stakeholders’ goals and measures of success.

  When will construction take place?

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2015 following construction of the ODOT sponsored I-75 Thru the Valley and I-75 Mill Creek Expressway projects.

How does this project relate to other I-75 projects occurring?

The Brent Spence Bridge Replacement/Rehabilitation Project will connect to the current I-75 Mill Creek Expressway Project. Both projects overlap at the Western Hills Viaduct interchange.

How will traffic be impacted during construction?

A Maintenance of Traffic plan will be developed for construction phases during subsequent steps of project development.

Will the looks of the bridge structure be considered?

An Aesthetics Committee has been established for the project.

Has a tunnel been considered as an alternative to the bridge?

Yes, a tunnel has been considered and conceptual alternative developed but was dismissed. Because of engineering complications, cost concerns and the Purpose and Need requirements (number of lanes, local and through access, cost) the tunnel was not carried forward.

What is the cost of the project?

At this time, cost estimates for construction are being developed based on the alternatives being carried forward for further development.

Can transit alternatives be considered for this project instead of only highway alternatives?

The purpose of the Brent Spence Bridge project is to address the roadway aspect of the regional mobility plan for the corridor.  All alternatives do not preclude the future plans for the modal alternatives identified for the region.  HOV lanes will be investigated in future steps if warranted by the capacity analysis of the alternatives. Transit alignments are east of Brent Spence Bridge on Clay Wade Bailey Bridge, OH 2nd and 3rd Street and under Brent Spence Bridge at the transit center.

Will residences or businesses be taken as a result of this project and when will right of way acquisition occur?

The number of acquisitions that will occur depends on the alternative that is selected as the preferred.  As much work as possible will be done within existing right of way.  Right of way acquisition is expected to occur in 2010.

Can thru trucks be banned from I-75 within I-275?

Some of the trucks have origins or destinations within the I-275 corridor, so these must use the system as is.  Enforcing a truck diversion has been tried here and elsewhere and found difficult to implement.  It is against FHWA policy to forcibly divert trucks, who pay considerable road use and fuel taxes, from using any part of the roadway system, except for hazardous cargo routes.

Will noise barriers be erected in residential areas where additional lanes are proposed?

A noise study will be completed in future steps to determine noise barrier needs.

How do I get on the mailing list to receive project information and updates?

Mailing information can be sent in through the Feedback page on the project website, the project hotline, or contact the project team.

Who decides which alternative will be chosen from the ones developed?

ODOT, KYTC, and FHWA will choose the preferred alternative based on public input, environmental impacts, ability to meet purpose and need, and constructability.

What is the ODOT 14-Step Project Development Process?

ODOT's Project Development Process (PDP) is an effort to streamline the planning and environmental processes, improve the quality of construction plans, and reduce delays in overall project delivery. For more information on the PDP, visit www.dot.state.oh.us/pdp.  This project will be following the PDP process.
